BEING A LAWYER IN THE MODERN WORLD

Do you know that most students have no clue of what happens around them? These set of students have no knowledge of global policies, neither do they know how these policies affect them. They are not commercially aware; neither do they have knowledge about various professional opportunities that spring up every day.

I’ll be painting a scenario with two different characters.

The first character is Bobby. Bobby is a first class student at the University of Law. He has never interned neither has he ever attended a webinar or taken any professional course. He is not commercially aware and at such has no idea how policies affect him. Bobby exists solely for the classroom. He basically just lives a triangular life.

Yes we all agree that he has exceptional grades, but the bottom-line is that he gets these grades at the expense of his professional development.

Let’s look at our second character Angelo.

Angelo is a first class law student at the University of Michigan. He has interned with a few law firms and also taken various online professional courses. He has engaged in virtual internships and attends webinars he considers relevant to his professional development. He also participates in various programs organized within his school. Angelo does not live a triangular life, but rather he finds a way to balance all these activities with his studies.

Now let’s assume I give you the opportunity to be either of these two students, who would you choose?

I know some of us wouldn’t want to be anyone but ourselves; however this is just a question to ascertain which type of student you would like to be out of the two characters.

Please be genuine with your answer.

I’m certain that majority if not all of us chose Angelo. However, despite our preference some of us are like Bobby. We don’t engage in any professional activity neither do we have a clue how various policies affect us.
